Wedding Jewellery Melbourne – How to choose what is right for you.

Believe it or not, Google is not only the best place to find accurate information about Wedding Jewellery Melbourne. If you’re thinking about buying expensive jewellery, reading up on Google may or may not help you. Articles from different sources can sound so repetitive without being informative. It will also leave you confused and no better than you were an hour ago when you Googled “how to choose a diamond”.

With that said, here are some tips when shopping for fine Wedding Jewellery Melbourne.

Diamonds… or something else?

While diamonds are probably the most popular stone for weddings. There are so many different stones that one can choose from for an exquisite piece of jewellery. If you are planning to propose or know that someone is going to pop the question soon ask yourself if you may be open to the idea of using other stones in your engagement ring.

Rubies and sapphires are also a great alternative to diamonds because they are very hard, scoring 9.0 on Mohs’ hardness scale. Diamonds score 10 on Mohs’ hardness scale. The hardness of rubies and sapphires means that they are able to withstand daily wear and tear well.

Sapphires also come in a variety of colours, not just blue! There are yellow, green, pink, orange, purple and even black sapphires. Therefore being open-minded about which type of stone to use in a ring will open up a whole new world of options for you. Besides, you may end up with a really unique piece of Wedding Jewellery Melbourne that will most certainly become a unique family heirloom.

Diamond Certification

If one does not have much experience with gemstones, it would be best to buy stones that come with an identification certificate from a reputable lab. However, not all certificates are created equal. GIA (Gemological Institute of America) certificates are the most reliable and well-known for diamonds.

Different laboratories may have different grading standards, so it is best to avoid those that have a poor reputation. For example, EGL (European Gemological Laboratories) certificates have been banned by RapNet, the diamond trading network for people in the jewellery trade. Inconsistencies in grading diamonds most certainly impacts you, the consumer.

Imagine if you bought an EGL certified diamond that was supposedly of E colour, VS1 clarity, with excellent cut, polish and symmetry. Years later, for some reason, you misplace the diamond certificate and decide to have GIA produce a certificate for your diamond. And you realise that the diamond you purchased is actually of G colour and SI clarity. You would have paid too much for your diamond, and at that point, kicking yourself will not bring your money back!

Unfortunately, GIA certificates do not tell you if a diamond has a brown, green or milky tinge. A high colour grade diamond (e.g. D colour) can have a brown or green tinge. Also, a milky appearance when viewed from the underside of the diamond.

Diamonds like this usually fetch a lower price as the brown, green and milky appearance does affect the overall appearance. Since this information is not available on the certificate, many shoppers do not know. Therefore do not look for it or ask about it.

The Right Jeweller

If you are wondering if a jeweller is right for you, look at samples of their work or recent photos of jewellery they have made. This will give you a feel of their style. For example, does the work have a very handmade feel, or is it very fine and intricate? Depending on the piece you have in mind and your personal style, pick a jeweller that is familiar with the style of jewellery you want. Also provide your jeweller with some photos of what you like, which will help them understand what you want even better!

Find a jeweller you can trust

To be completely confident with your purchase, you will need to find a jeweller you can trust. So shop around, speak to as many jewellers as you can, and pick the one you trust most and are the most comfortable with! A good jeweller will be happy to answer your questions, help you make informed decisions and earn your trust.
